On September 5, 2019, California joined other states including Ohio, Arizona, Connecticut, Hawaii, Oregon, and Rhode Island in banning latex gloves in retail food establishments when Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill No. 677 into law.
The law will go into effect on January 1, 2020.
Like Ohio, who banned latex gloves in food service and retail food establishments this past March, California moved forward with this legislation due to increasing incidents of latex allergies when workers and consumers are exposed to products containing natural rubber latex.
“Life-threatening latex allergy reactions and the development of latex allergies can be prevented by avoiding all latex-related products, which can be found in health care environments, restaurants, childcare facilities, workplaces, schools, communities, and homes,” the act states.
Senate Bill No. 677 states that workers can wear “safe alternatives to latex gloves” including nitrile, vinyl, and polyethylene gloves – the same alternatives outlined by the state of Ohio in their latex glove ban.
So, if you’re a wholesaler, distributor, retail food establishment, or employee who works in California, what are some alternatives to latex gloves you can use starting next year?
