Bandages are a necessity when it comes to treating a wound. Not only do they absorb excess fluid, they also protect the wound from any lingering bacteria and prevent infection.
While types of bandages vary, most consist of an absorbent pad covered by woven fabric, plastic, or latex rubber as an adhesive. The bandage is applied so that the pad covers the wound, and the adhesive sticks to the surrounding skin to hold the pad in place. So, how are these bandages made anyway?
- First, a thin coat of glue is applied on one surface of the fabric and then heated to roughly 49 degrees C in an oven to puff it up, creating holes in the glue coating
- The adhesive fabric is then laid out and cut into varying lengths and widths, and then put into a large roll
- The fabric for the small cushion pads is cut into varying sizes, and then put into a large roll
- A machine then takes the roll of adhesive fabric and the roll of fabric for the small cushion pads and seals them together
- The completed bandages are then sealed in protective packaging for safe distribution
