As you may know, wearing a face mask significantly reduces the spread of the COVID-19 virus from person to person. In fact, most states and local businesses now require people to wear face coverings when in public spaces.
Since multiple variants of COVID-19 have begun circulating in the US, the CDC recently released new guidance and recommendations that urge people to consider wearing two masks. They recommend wearing one disposable mask underneath a cloth mask to add extra layers and stop more respiratory droplets from getting inside your mask or escaping from your mask if you are sick. It’s also important to make sure both masks are fitted snugly against your face. Click here to watch Dr. Fauci explain why. Below is an excerpt from the CDC summarizing the details:
Add Layers of Material
2 ways to layer
- Use a cloth mask that has multiple layers of fabric.
- Wear a disposable mask underneath a cloth mask.
- The cloth mask should push the edges of the disposable mask against your face.
Over the past year, a lot of studies have been done to prove the effectiveness of wearing masks. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), COVID-19 spreads mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets that travel through the air when you cough, sneeze, talk, shout, or even sing. These droplets can then land in the mouths or noses of people who are near you or they may breathe those droplets in. Masks act as a barrier and prevent respiratory droplets from escaping from the mouth.
So, if one mask is effective in preventing the spread of the virus, is wearing two masks double as effective? Join us as we look at what the experts have to say.
Because the CDC released statistics stating that face coverings can reduce the risk of coronavirus infection by more than 70%, many people have started to wear two masks at once to increase their odds of staying virus-free. While there isn’t much scientific data out quite yet on the effectiveness of wearing two masks rather than just one, some experts say it might be worth it.
According to Health.com, the issue comes down to quality vs. quantity. For example, if a well-fitting, effective face mask isn’t available, then two lesser-quality face masks worn together might improve protection. Whether you decide to wear two masks or just one, the most important factor to consider is that you’re wearing your masks properly – covering your nose and mouth and fitting them to your face.
